OK, so your property has been cleared of rats and mice. How can you keep it that way?
Food and shelter are the key
Rodents require both a source of food and shelter to survive. If an environment doesn’t fulfill those needs then they won’t tend to colonise it.
Remove food sources
- Don’t leave food in the open. Keep non-refrigerated food in sealed containers. There’s lots of great plastic and metal food storage solutions out there that work well and look good too. The added bonus is that the food won’t be so quick to spoil and it will help avoid attracting other unwanted pests.
- Clean up cooking utensils and dishes soon after use. Clean up spills straight-away.
- Keep the BBQ clean.
- Make sure rubbish bins have tight-fitting lids. Keep them emptied regularly and clean the empty bins if required.
- Keep compost bins as far from the house as possible.
- Don’t forget pet foods - keep these indoors where rodents can’t access. Consider storing uneaten food in containers overnight.
Remove shelter
Seal up holes inside and outside the home to prevent entry by rodents. Mice can squeeze through very tiny gaps! There are lots of places to check as rodent entry points:
- Around windows and doors, behind cabinets, stoves, refrigerators, sinks, washing machines, fireplaces.
- In the roof among the rafters, gables, and eaves.
- Around holes for electrical, plumbing, cable, and gas lines.
Be aware of disease
Rats and mice can carry diseases including the debilitating Leptospirosis bacterium. This is transferred to humans in by contact with their urine. Be careful when cleaning out areas after rodent control activities.
